Happy Earth Day

Today is April 22, 2014 otherwise known as Earth Day.  Today's weather in Central NY is going to put a "damper" on outside activities perhaps.  Some folks won't let a little rain stop them from doing their part!  They will just throw on the rain gear and head out for a earth day related project.  Others will put off their event to tomorrow perhaps.

Keith Peavey and I are members of the Oriskany Falls Rotary Club and we have a highway cleanup project scheduled for tomorrow, April 23rd.  Unfortunately they are predicting snow again I think but we will brave the elements and meet at the fire house in Oriskany Falls about 5:30 and pick up trash along both sides of Route 12b all the way to Route 20. All supplies are provided - gloves, trash bags, reflective vests, and the firemen and fire police will be there slowing down traffic for us.  If you or perhaps your group, like a youth sports league or youth church group would like to join us, we have lots of adult supervision.  We will also have a pizza party after-please feel free to join us!

If you are looking for an earth day related activity here are a few more ideas:

1) Plant a tree:  today is a perfect day to plant a tree and perhaps start a new family tradition.  If you join the Arbor Day Foundation for as little as $10 dollars they will give you ten free trees or Plant 10 trees in our National Forest. Find out more at Arborday.org.

2) Make a birdhouse:  Nature crafts are fun for the whole family and if you make a birdhouse or birdfeeder you and your family will reap the rewards for the rest of the summer and fall!  Birds & Blooms offers really easy plans for a bird house.  Find out more at: Birdsandblooms.com.

3) Reduce, Reuse & Recycle:  Talk a walk and bring along a couple of reusable shopping bags to put plastic and metal cans and bottles in you see lying along side of the road, bring a paper bag with handles for trash.  If where you live isn't conducive to this, drive to a local park and do your good deed there!  Then bring back your finds and dispose of properly!

4) Clean out:  Clean out your home or garage, be sure to get your children involved by going through old clothes and toys.  Then hold a garage sale, clothing swap or donate them to a local thrift shop.

Remember Earth Day doesn't have to be just one day a year - try to plan something once a month or as often as you can - schedule it on the calendar and get the whole family involved.
