Navigating NYS DBL and PFL for Maternity Leave: What You Need to Know
As I prepare for my own maternity leave, I’ve had a lot of conversations with clients (and friends!) about what benefits are available to expecting parents here in New York. It can definitely feel overwhelming to sort through everything while also getting ready for a new baby, so I wanted to share a quick, straightforward guide on how New York State Disability Benefits Law (DBL) and Paid Family Leave (PFL) work, especially when it comes to maternity leave.
What is NYS DBL?
DBL (Disability Benefits Law) provides short-term disability benefits for employees who are unable to work due to a non-work-related illness or injury, which includes pregnancy and postpartum recovery.
-
Who’s eligible? Most employees who work in NY and have been employed for at least 4 weeks.
-
How much does it pay? 50% of your average weekly wage, up to $170/week.
-
How long does it last? Up to 26 weeks in a 52-week period.
-
When can you use it? Typically, DBL covers 6 weeks after a vaginal birth or 8 weeks after a C-section.
What is NYS PFL?
PFL (Paid Family Leave) kicks in after DBL and allows you to bond with your new baby while still receiving partial income and job protection.
-
Who’s eligible? Full-time employees after 26 weeks of work, or part-time after 175 days.
-
How much does it pay? 67% of your average weekly wage (capped at 67% of the NY State Average Weekly Wage).
-
How long does it last? Up to 12 weeks in a 52-week period.
-
When can you use it? After your DBL ends, perfect for bonding time with your baby.
How Do They Work Together?
The beauty of these benefits is that they can be used back-to-back. You’ll typically start with DBL immediately after birth for recovery, then transition into PFL for bonding. Together, they offer important time and income support during one of life’s biggest transitions.
As someone about to step into this season myself, I truly understand how much peace of mind comes from knowing what to expect. If you have questions about your coverage or want to make sure your business is set up to support employees through DBL and PFL, feel free to reach out, I’m here to help before I head out, and my team will continue supporting you while I’m away.
Wishing all the fellow mamas (and dads!) a smooth, joy-filled journey into parenthood!
